How do you say it? Well, “Karavaneh” is one way, as the name Karawane comes from a German sound poem by Hugo Ball, about the failure of language and and how, through sound, we rediscover commonality. It also represents the desert caravan )”caravana” in Spanish, where borders are just lines on a map, and all travellers may join and be welcome. It is a journey of two DJs who left the same town to embark on different experiences and to meet again, one wild night, in a back room party of a Senegalese restaurant in Barcelona. Ali’s journey took him through house, disco, and the perennial gear-geekery that befits a top-shelf producer. Mark played with roots reggae sound systems, funk, soul and hip hop nights, before moving to South America and Spain for more than a decade and falling deeply in love with the soundscapes of these lands and cultures. When they met again in Barcelona, Karawane was born- a tension point between two DJ styles, two trajectories through music, and somehow, it all just fits.
Karawane plays edits and originals – dancefloor music from Brazil to Burkina Faso, Cuba to the Congo. Whether playing original cumbias on a summer’s day in Barcelona, or delving into the basslines of Brazil in the dark winter nights of Scotland, our DJ sets are always a journey and a shared experience on the dancefloor. Mark and Ali play a 4-deck B2B set always, pushing each other in new directions, weaving and cutting in and out of each other’s sounds to keep that sense of the unexpected just around the corner.

Club events
From YAAM in Berlin to Sala Apolo in Barcelona, Karawane always bring a unique sound to the dancefloor, which is warm, welcoming, deep and vibrant. Joyous music from afrobeat to salsa, cumbia to island sounds, and all of the brassy bits in the middle, a Karawane DJ set will make you move. We play a 4-deck setup and can bring live percussion, live brass, visual backing and projection mapping to your venue. We are resident DJs in Under Canvas (Inverness) Kings (Dundee), and El Santo (Glasgow), plus curators of various festival stages.

Ali is always cooking up beats in the studio, and there is so much new music to come in 2025. Karawane are signed to the Samedia Trax record label, as well as producing some independent music for the dancefloor. We are always open to collaboration from musicians, to remix and reimagine music, or to create something new together.
